Many residential companies pay their technicians on a commission basis. Although there’s many honest technicians, I’ve seen too many technicians trying to increase their pay checks by adding unnecessary repairs. If you ever have any questions or doubts feel free to call us at (602) 326-5714 for a quote over the phone or our opinion as to the repairs being quoted.  You can also call the management of the company you have at your residence to explain and justify all repairs.

  1. A lot of technicians who come out to do the maintenance at your house do not know how to repair them. I’ve seen technicians who have only been in the field for a week perform maintenance calls.  That just simply is not enough time to train someone in order to know what they’re doing.
  1. There’s a company policy not to discuss pricing over the phone. That’s because if you know their prices ahead of time, you’d never have them come out to your house.  As an example if you call Aspen Air and ask how much it would be to change out a contractor its $195 out the door which includes tax.  One company that advertises heavily will charge you $347.65 for the exact same part and it’s on the discretion of the technician that’s at your house if he’s willing to waive the service call charge or not.  Hence the info about paying commission on repairs.  Then after telling you this price, they’ll later tell you that they have to add tax.  Even if you don’t use our company, make sure to find an honest company with straight forward pricing.
  1. Companies will charge a premium on higher SEER/more efficient equipment. Even though the install itself is the same they want to add thousands.  Yes the equipment costs are higher, but not thousands.  Ex:  One local company that heavily advertises quoted $5000 to replace a 4 ton 13 SEER package heat pump.  They then quoted $8000 to install a 15 SEER even though when I looked up the pricing of the equipment the difference was under $800.   Note: Some very high efficiency equipment can be thousands more.  As always if you ever have a question or would like a quote over the phone please call us at (602) 326-5714.
  1. Air conditioning contractors will try to upsell you on products you don’t need. A good example would be a coil clean. There are technicians that tell you it’s a requirement to clean them every year or your air conditioner will fail and use a high amount of electricity.  Cleaning your coil will help with the efficiency, but as long as you change your filter on a regular basis a coil clean will only be need once every 5 years or more.  I’ve seen units where they’ve never put a filter in and within 2 years the coils are completely clogged causing the unit to freeze and stop working.  There are also aftermarket start capacitors and lubricants.  Always research these items before purchasing them.
